Yesterday we welcomed Shaun A. Pennington to share a reading from her debut book, The New Slavery: Sugar, Healthcare and the Medical Mafia, at our STT Rotary East ECO club meeting space!

The discussion explored the brutal and oppressive history of sugar in our region, rooted in slavery and plantation economies here in the Virgin Islands. We reflected on how this legacy of exploitation for the sake of economic gain continues to shape modern food and healthcare systems that often prioritize addictive, highly processed, sugar-laden products, at the expense of access to healthier, more nourishing options, ultimately making people more sick.
This week on Wednesday (Apr 14) from 6:30-7:30pm the Rotary Club of St. Thomas East ECO hosted an book reading by Shaun A. Pennington. Pennington is an award-winning journalist, founder of The Virgin Islands Source, and a lifelong advocate for truth, justice, and personal awakening. Drawing on decades of global experience and deep personal insight, her debut book The New Slavery: Sugar, Healthcare and the Medical Mafia explores the hidden links between diet, chronic disease, and modern healthcare—challenging readers to rethink health, systems, and personal responsibility.

Thank you to all who joined us in person and online!
