Yesterday we welcomed Shaun A. Pennington to share a reading from her debut book, The New Slavery: Sugar, Healthcare and the Medical Mafia, at our STT Rotary East ECO club meeting space!
The discussion explored the brutal and oppressive history of sugar in our region, rooted in slavery and plantation economies here in the Virgin Islands. We reflected on how this legacy of exploitation for the sake of economic gain continues to shape modern food and healthcare systems that often prioritize addictive, highly processed, sugar-laden products, at the expense of access to healthier, more nourishing options, ultimately making people more sick.
